Biography:
Raoul Duke is a fictional journalist and the protagonist of Hunter S. Thompson's 1971 novel, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." The character is largely considered a thinly veiled alter ego of Thompson himself.
Duke embarks on a drug-fueled journey to Las Vegas with his attorney, Dr. Gonzo, ostensibly to cover a motorcycle race. However, their trip quickly devolves into a chaotic exploration of the American Dream gone awry, fueled by a variety of psychoactive substances.
He is portrayed as a highly intelligent but deeply disturbed individual, wrestling with disillusionment and societal anxieties. Duke's journalistic integrity is questionable, prioritizing personal experience and subjective observation over objective reporting.
The character gained widespread recognition through Terry Gilliam's 1998 film adaptation, where he was portrayed by Johnny Depp. Depp's portrayal captured Duke's manic energy, paranoia, and distinctive mannerisms, solidifying the character's place in popular culture.
